During our trip to Thailand in December 2013, we spent 5 days in Bangkok. And given the size of Bangkok, we chose to stay in 2 different neighborhoods: Khaosan and Sukhumvit. This is to optimize the routes to discover the different facets of this very special city. Here are our tips for finding a cheap hotel in Bangkok.
The buddy lodge in the heart of khao san road, an expensive hotel in bangkok
The Buddy Lodge is a modern hotel located in the heart of Bangkok’s busiest street: Formerly relatively calm and typical, this street is now home to guest houses and hotels of all kinds, food and counterfeit stalls, a MacDonald, 2 seven-elevens (ideal for shopping), not very Catholic massage parlors and more or less dodgy bars.
Housed in the heights of a 6-storey building, the Buddy Lodge has 76 rooms, a fitness center and a swimming pool on the roof. The rooftop swimming pool is really very pleasant, especially in a city like Bangkok where the heat can quickly get overwhelming. There’s even a bar overlooking the pool.
As for the rooms, they are clean, air-conditioned, equipped with a safe, a fridge and a private bathroom. The bedding is correct. I advise you to ask for a room that is neither on the first floor because there is a nightclub on the ground floor nor on the street side. Indeed, Khao San Road never sleeps.
The location of the Buddy Lodge is really central since it is 1 km from the Grand Palace ( one of the main temples in Bangkok ), 10 minutes from taxi boats and 4 km from the MBK shopping center. Ideal for visiting the centre-north and the east of the city.
I give the rating of 3.5/5 to the Buddy Lodge , the hotel is clean, secure, well located, the standard rooms are of reasonable size and the swimming pool on the roof is really very pleasant. On the other hand, the welcome and friendliness of the staff is clearly the weak point of this cheap hotel in Bangkok.
The royal president in modern bangkok
The Royal President is located in Bangkok’s shopping district, Sukhumvit. Sukhumvit is on the eastern left bank of the city. It is crossed by both the Subway and the Skytrain. The district is organized around the main street (Sukhumvit Road), and, on each side, perpendicular streets are called Sukhumvit Soi 1, 2,
The Royal President Hotel is located in perpendicular number 15, about 400 meters from Sukhumvit Road and 600 meters from Asok and Nana Skytrain stations. Who says set back says calm, on the other hand it is not easy to find it. We took a good thirty minutes to find it, no sign or indication. A free shuttle (tuk-tuk) runs to Asoke and Nana (BTS network) and Sukhumvit (MRT network) stations every half hour between 8am and 10pm.
The Royal President Bangkok offers spacious rooms (about 30 square meters), well appointed and equipped with a small kitchen area. On the security side, there is a safe. And in the bathroom there is a bathtub and a separate shower. The buffet breakfast is taken in the restaurant of the hotel, it contains Thai and international specialties.
The hotel also has a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool. Let’s talk about the swimming pool: it is located on the ground floor, in the heart of the hotel. Unfortunately given the size of the hotel and the neighboring hotels, it is always in the shade and overlooked crazy. Pity.
